about the book

The Gap Between What You Think and What You Say

In organizations everywhere, talented professionals hold back the insights that could change everything: a better idea, a hard truth, a solution nobody else sees. They're not disengaged or incompetent. They're calculating: is it safe? Will I be heard? Is it worth the risk?

Kristine calls this The Voice-Values Gap™, the distance between what professionals believe inside and what they actually say out loud at work. The wider that gap grows, the less effective they become. And the less effective they become, the more their organizations pay for it.

This book is about closing that gap. Not by changing who you are, but by giving you the tools to speak more like the person you already are on the inside.

Built around The VOICE Framework™ and grounded in two decades of executive experience, The Clearest Voice in the Room equips readers to communicate with intention and power in every setting that matters: meetings, presentations, hard conversations, and all the small moments in between.

Years of coaching communicators taught me one thing — the right coach at the right moment changes everything. Kristine is that kind of coach."

Kristine shows that in environments steeped in tradition, a woman using her voice doesn't just change meetings; she can change cultures.

"I worked with Kristine for much of my career, and her voice, and the voices of many other strong women leaders, shaped the leader I am today. The Clearest Voice in the Room is an essential tool, not just for women navigating corporate environments, but for leaders trying to break the thinking in rooms where everyone has historically looked and thought the same. Kristine shows that in environments steeped in tradition, a woman using her voice doesn't just change meetings; she can change cultures. This book is a reminder that leadership is better when more voices are heard. I've seen firsthand the impact of women who speak with clarity and conviction. This book captures the challenge of breaking through the status quo and the undeniable clarity that follows when you finally do."

Kristine names what women are feeling at work and gives them the language, and the courage, to act on it.

"I've seen so many women doubt whether their voice belongs in the room. The Clearest Voice in the Room meets them right there. Kristine names what women are feeling at work and gives them the language, and the courage, to act on it. This isn't about being louder. It's about being clearer and more confident and trusting yourself. Every woman who knows she has more to say should read this book."

Kristine understands that speaking up isn't about confidence alone—it's about culture, clarity, and courage. This book gives women permission to use their voice and gives organizations a roadmap for why that matters.

"I spend my life inside organizations watching what happens when people feel seen, heard, and valued... and when they don't. The Clearest Voice in the Room is exactly the kind of book workplaces need right now. Kristine understands that speaking up isn't about confidence alone—it's about culture, clarity, and courage. This book gives women permission to use their voice and gives organizations a roadmap for why that matters. Kristine doesn't just teach voice—she models it. Reading this book feels like being coached by someone who has actually lived in the rooms she's writing about. If work is going to be better, it has to be better for everyone, and this book helps make that possible."

Lindsay Boccardo
Keynote speaker and leadership trainer

Kristine has an extraordinary gift for helping others find the courage to speak with truth and intention.

"In my meetings, I keep a stuffed moose on the table as a reminder to say the thing everyone is thinking but no one has said yet. That kind of courage doesn't come from being the loudest voice in the room; it comes from being the clearest—and that is exactly what The Clearest Voice in the Room teaches so powerfully.

Kristine has an extraordinary gift for helping others find the courage to speak with truth and intention. Our work together has been equal parts rigorous, reflective, and joyful—and that same spirit lives on every page of The Clearest Voice in the Room. This book gives women the language and confidence to put their own moose on the table, every single day. I believe there are souls in our lives who are meant to ride along, and what a fun—and impactful—ride it has been."

Delphine Francois
President, Beauty Division, Conair and BaBylissPRO

The Clearest Voice in the Room is equal parts practical playbook and permission slip, and it gives women the tools to do what I've watched Kristine do at the highest levels: lead, decide, and communicate with unmistakable clarity.

"In branding, I've spent my career helping leaders and organizations find the words that truly sound like them—and almost no one starts out with that level of clarity. Kristine is the exception. Having partnered with her on multiple rebrands, I can say with confidence that the voice you hear on these pages is her real voice—and it's powerful.

As a founder, I work with leaders at every stage of growth, and the ones who truly cut through are always the ones who know exactly what they stand for and say it out loud. That's the heart of what Kristine teaches in this book. The Clearest Voice in the Room is equal parts practical playbook and permission slip, and it gives women the tools to do what I've watched Kristine do at the highest levels: lead, decide, and communicate with unmistakable clarity. I'll be recommending it to every woman in my network who's ready to stop shrinking her voice and start using it."

Too many women enter important rooms overprepared but under-voiced—editing themselves in real time.

"After years of advising executives and developing leaders, I've learned that capability is rarely the issue. Voice is. Too many women enter important rooms overprepared but under-voiced—editing themselves in real time. Kristine gives language to that tension and provides a practical path forward. The Clearest Voice in the Room is a timely resource for women ready to lead with greater conviction."

This book belongs on the desk of every woman navigating a corporate room, and in the curriculum of every program serious about developing the next generation of women leaders.

"I spent much of the last decade of my career teaching and mentoring future women leaders. In our WomenLead program, we emphasized “being at the table.” Kristine is the rare scholar-practitioner who provides the explicit tools to make that possible. In The Clearest Voice in the Room, she names something I've watched hold brilliant women back for decades — the Voice-Values Gap™ — and then hands them a practical framework to close it. This book belongs on the desk of every woman navigating a corporate room, and in the curriculum of every program serious about developing the next generation of women leaders."

Q&A with the author

Straight Answers with Kristine

Questions worth sitting with on leadership, voice and what it actually takes to build organizations where the best ideas get heard.

73%

of the time, gender-diverse teams make better business decisions
(WEF)

58%

higher profits where womens voices are heard and engaged
(Gallup)

45%

higher earnings per share in companies with women in leadership
(WEF)

What's the business case for closing The Voice-Values Gap™?

The ROI is measurable. Teams with more voices actively heard make better decisions 73% of the time (WEF). Ineffective communication costs large organizations over $100M annually. And you don't lose talented people because of pay alone. You lose them because they stopped feeling heard. Closing the Gap isn't a culture initiative. It's a performance strategy.

What do you say to leaders who think this is a "soft skills" issue?

I'd say they're confusing soft with unimportant. Every hard business outcome: a decision that gets made, a strategy that gets implemented, a team that stays or leaves, runs through communication. The Voice-Values Gap™ is the distance between what your people are capable of and what your organization is actually getting from them. That's not soft. That's one of the most consequential gaps in any organization.

What's the first thing someone should do after reading the book?

Identify one conversation they've been avoiding, and have it. Not with a framework. Not with a rehearsed script. Just with the clarity of knowing what they stand for and what they want to say. The VOICE Framework™ is the foundation, but the first step is always the same: speak. The rest gets easier from there.

How do you speak up when you're the most junior person in the room?

Start with a question rather than a statement. Questions are inherently curious, not confrontational, and they create space for your perspective without requiring you to declare a position. Then, once you're in the habit of speaking, the statements come more naturally. Your seniority doesn't determine the value of your insight. The room loses every time you stay quiet.

How can introverts become powerful communicators?

Introversion is not the obstacle people think it is. Introverts are often the most thoughtful people in the room. They process deeply, they listen well, and when they speak, people pay attention precisely because they don't speak constantly. The work for introverts isn't to become louder. It's to trust that their timing and their perspective are already valuable, and then act on that trust.

What does an organization with no Voice-Values Gap™ actually look like?

Meetings where the best idea wins, not the loudest one. Leaders who get real feedback instead of polished versions of what people think they want to hear. Teams that disagree productively because they trust the process and each other. Retention of the people who, at another organization, would have quietly left. It's not a utopia. It's just an organization that has decided the cost of silence is higher than the cost of honesty.

What do you hope workplaces look like in 2056, thirty years after this book's release?

I hope The Voice-Values Gap™ is a concept people have to look up because they've never experienced it. I hope meetings are places where ideas are interrogated, not people. I hope leaders are chosen for their ability to draw out the best in others, not just their ability to project confidence from the front of the room. And I hope the next generation of leaders, the ones reading this book now, or whose parents and mentors read it, never have to calculate whether their voice belongs in the room. I hope they just know that it does.

She Knows Exactly What it Costs to Stay Quiet.

Most leaders know exactly what needs to be said in the room. Far too often, they don't say it.

Dr. Kristine Sickels calls this The Voice-Values Gap™, and the cost runs in both directions: leaders carry the quiet weight of words they didn't speak, and organizations pay in unflagged risks, watered-down decisions, and strategies built on the loudest voice instead of the clearest one.

Kristine helps leaders and organizations close that gap. After twenty years inside the rooms where decisions get made – most recently as SVP of Marketing for a $2 billion portfolio including Crockpot, Calphalon, Mr. Coffee, and Oster – she now teaches The VOICE Framework™ to leaders who want to speak with clarity and conviction when it counts.

She is CEO of Mic Drop, co-founder of C-Sweet, and author of The Clearest Voice in the Room (Mic Drop Books, September 2026). She holds a doctorate from Georgia State and an MBA from Michigan.
